Dear friends,
Opposing the Welfare Reform Bill is getting results! Abolition of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) is being debated this afternoon and Wednesday.
Our urgent action is needed NOW!
Last week, a number of mothers and grandmothers emailed the Lords. They were indignant at the prospect of single mothers or both parents in a couple being forced to prepare for ‘work’ (as if caring wasn’t work!) as soon as the baby is one, and jobseeking from age five (clause 57 of the Welfare Reform Bill).
This was taken up by some Peers. Two letters -- from a grandmother and from a primary school teacher -- were read out in Committee. This sparked a wider debate about the impact of the Bill on children and mothers; it put the government under more pressure to make changes before the Bill comes to a vote in a couple of weeks’ time. See: http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/ld201011/ldhansrd/text/111110-gc0001.htm#11111075000137 You can watch Thursday’s debate online on http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Main/Player.aspx?meetingId=9331 The discussion on age 5 is second, after the beginning discussion on compulsory work experience.
There has been huge opposition to the abolition of DLA, and we must make it count now. The Hardest Hit march in May showed how worried and determined people are. There have been many other actions, locally and nationally. We all know that replacing DLA with the more restricted Personal Independence Payment (PIP) means a cut of £2.17 billion. We know that this would affect more than 700,000 disabled people, including people on low rate care component which would be abolished -- some of whom use it to enable them to do waged work.
We know that this would have a knock-on impact on carers’ benefits, leaving thousands of families even worse off.
Campaigners against care cuts recently won the High Court ruling that Isle of Wight Council couldn’t cut its care services – which would have affected 2,000 people. It shows that if we organise we can get those who make laws respond to us. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-15690065
Please write straight away to the Lords, explaining how you or your loved ones will be affected, and demanding that they oppose these reforms. A list of emails is below. Please cc us a copy of your letter. See here for more about the Lords and writing by post if they have no public email. http://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/lords/
